Norway - Untapped Adventure!

Updated: Oct 30, 2023

WeAdventure's ethos - we only take you to the places we know and love. Norway has a special place in my heart as I have family in Oslo and as such have travelled to the Nordic nation many times in both summer and winter. We love Norway and the Norwegian way of life. This is the country that coined the phrase, "no bad weather, just bad clothing!"

My own journey to start cycling tours in Norway started in 2018, at an Adventure Travel conference in Alaska. The Norwegian Tourism Authority hosted an event and afterwards asked for help in creating routes and itineraries for cycle tours. In their words, they wanted to put Norway on the map as a world class cycling destination. I volunteered along with a few other travel professionals. and we created a focus group to liaise and advise the tourism body on how to overcome some of the unique challenges of the Fjord landscape.

Fast forward to 2020, and we had a fantastic tour ready to launch, one that showcased the culture, nature and beauty of the unique Norwegian landscape. Then Covid came along and put the whole project on ice! This is why in 2023 I was so happy to finally bring our first group to Norway. The Tourism guys were also happy and kept a close eye on proceedings, treating the group like VIP visitors.

WeAdventure's 'Norway - Biking and Boating the Fjords' trip begins in the Capital, Oslo, before boarding the Scenic train North to the Western Fjords region. Our Oslo experience starts right in the centre of the action, and takes in the Munch Museum and urban art and culture of the country. The train journey transitions perfectly from bustling capital to sparsely populated mountains and fjord scenery that has to be seen to be believed. The route itself winds through promontory and valley, over passes and across the water on almost daily ferries. A highlight is the Atlantic Road, which featured in the recent James Bond Movie, and is known as one of the most beautiful roads in the world.

You can check out the full itinerary here. But suffice to say that the trip exceeded expectations across the board. The food, the hotels, the scenery, bikes and management were all 10/10. Nothing could beat diving into the cool clean fjord waters after a day cycling, hiking or kayaking through the steep sided switchbacks of Troll's Ladder, Geiranger Fjord, Valldal, or the most beautiful city in Norway, Ålesund.
